The US House of Representatives is moving forward with spending cuts despite the risks of a shutdown

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is trying to move forward with major spending cuts this week that have no chance of becoming law and could lead to a partial US government shutdown by next Sunday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sought to avoid that scenario when he reached a spending deal with Democratic President Joe Biden this spring, but some members of his party threatened to impeach him if he did not support deeper cuts that would be certain to be rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate.

McCarthy said lawmakers who blocked spending bills last week are now more willing to cooperate, but McCarthy has so far been unable to muster support for a temporary extension of spending as a group of hardline Republicans has refused to agree to it.
