Biden signs an order to ban certain technology investments in China
President Joe Biden today signed an executive order that strictly bans certain US investments in sensitive technology in China and requires government notification of funding in other technology sectors, senior administration officials said.
The officials said the long-awaited order authorizes the US Treasury secretary to regulate certain US investments in Chinese entities in three sectors: semiconductors, microelectronics, quantum information technologies and certain artificial intelligence systems.
The move could fuel tensions between the world's two largest economies, although US officials have insisted the ban was meant to address sharper national security risks, not to separate the two countries' closely interconnected economies.
