US jobless claims fell last week
The US Department of Labor said that jobless claims in the US fell by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 239,000 for the week ending August 12. Analysts had expected jobless claims to rise to 240,000 last week.
Unadjusted jobless claims fell by 15,067 to 212,850 last week, and continuing claims rose by 32,000 to 1.716 million in the week ending Aug. 5.
Other data showed that the Philadelphia manufacturing index rose for the first time in a year to 12.0 in August from -13.5 in July, and a measure of employment conducted by the Philadelphia Fed fell to -6.0 in August from -1.0 in July.
