US jobless claims fell unexpectedly last week
The US Labor Department said that jobless claims in the United States fell by 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 228,000 for the week ending August 26. Analysts had expected jobless claims to rise to 235,000 last week.
Continuing jobless claims rose by 28,000 to 1.725 million in the week ending Aug. 19, and US job openings fell to the lowest level in nearly two-and-a-half years in July.
The US dollar rose after the US data, as the main dollar index, which measures the performance of the US currency against 6 major currencies, rose 0.48% to 103.59, and the euro fell against the US dollar by 0.71% to 1.0846 dollars.
