UK consumer spending recovered in June
The British Retail Trade Authority said that the retail sales values increased by 3.4% on an annual basis during the month of June, after its record decline by 19.1% in April, the largest increase since May 2018, as the payment card company Barclay Card announced that total consumer spending decreased by 14.5% On an annual basis in June.
Spending on food and beverages outside the home decreased by 56% year-on-year in June and represented a significant improvement after a record drop of 70% in May as more food was bought for fast food or for delivery.
Finance Minister Rishi Sonak said last week that the government would finance discounts on dining out of the home on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesday in August, and cut the value-added tax for the hospitality and domestic tourism sector.
