Italy postpones regional elections due to Coronavirus
Sources said today that the municipal and regional elections in Italy scheduled for late spring will be postponed due to the Corona pandemic with the increase in new cases of the virus and will take place between September 15 and October 15, and the Cabinet approved this decision.
Most parties across the political spectrum support a national unity government led by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, which means that local administrations are one of the few areas in which individual parties can implement their own policies. Politicians have already been preparing for mayoral elections, but health officials have warned that the country may be exposed to a third wave of the virus in the coming weeks, and local ballot papers are considered crucial in Italy because they often affect national politics as party leaders derive much of their influence from their control over cities and regions.
