Draghi vows not to raise taxes
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi pledged today not to raise taxes and said his government would help mitigate rising electricity costs, as he told business leaders he would like to strike a deal with major companies to help Italy rebuild from the economic chaos caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Business leaders, in turn, have asked Draghi to stay in power for as long as possible and urged him to avoid the temptation to become head of state when the post becomes free next year and instead continue running the country.
Draghi said he hoped to solve Italy's problems with a recovery plan with billions of euros partly funded by the European Union, and pledged to spend more than 3 billion euros in the coming months to help curb the expected rise in retail electricity prices.
