The European Union is gradually phasing out gas, oil and coal imports from Russia
A draft statement showed that EU leaders will agree at this week's summit to phase out the EU's dependence on imports of Russian gas, oil and coal and also to discuss how to make the EU more strategically independent of global suppliers in these sectors and foodstuffs.
"We agreed to phase out our dependence on gas, oil and coal imports from Russia, however the task will be difficult because the European Union buys from Russia 45% of imported gas, about a third of its oil and nearly half of its coal," the draft statement said. In the face of increasing instability, strategic competition and security threats, we have decided to take more responsibility for our security and take more decisive steps towards building our European sovereignty, reducing our dependencies, and designing a new growth and investment model for 2030.
